As someone who has never been to Las Vegas, has had very little experience traveling for business, and is still learning proper “social cues” I was excited and nervous for the opportunities to meet people I had previously only known through phone calls and emails at PPAI Las Vegas. I was truly ecstatic to showcase our product to people who have not known the Maple Ridge brand. I was grateful for the time I would have to bond and grow with my team as well as humbled to learn more about our industry. Overall, I didn’t know what to expect, but kept an open mind to others and their ideas—while hopefully maintaining a closed wallet. Here are my takeaways from a “First Timer” experience.

How we present a message or information is as important as the message or information itself. Our delivery has a significant impact on how it is received. We all aspire to effectively communicate but may not even be aware of how we are being perceived by others. Being conscious of what “other messages” we may be unknowingly emitting is something to be considered. How our communications are perceived can make an enormous difference in morale, providing a sense of employees and coworkers feeling acknowledged, valued, respected and achieving a desired action or goal.

Employee acquisition and retention is a hot topic these days.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of February 2019, the unemployment rate was only 3.8%, with 7.1 million job openings but only 5.7 million hirings.  This has resulted in many companies struggling to find qualified employees while avoiding turnover.  Here at Maple Ridge Farms, though, we've created a culture that encourages our employees to not only sign on, but also to stay and build careers.

This year, we’re celebrating 40 years in a wonderful industry working with great partners. It seems like yesterday that we started out as a fresh new company in a huge industry that wasn’t used to food suppliers. The Maple Ridge Farms team embraces a tradition of volunteering. Collectively our full time employees spent over 725 hours last year volunteering outside of company time. Areas of involvement include reducing poverty and hunger, tackling environmental issues, improving health and education, providing meaningful outlets for youth, supporting church outreach programs, and donating skills and leadership to the promotional products industry through volunteer work at PPAI.
